The Atascadero Police K9 Program enhances public safety through highly trained canine teams dedicated to protection, detection, and lifesaving operations.

The Community’s Dogs

Although the City provides funding for basic care, such as food and veterinary services, the purchase and training of each K9 and handler are funded entirely through community support.
Each K9 represents an investment of over $20,000, made possible by generous contributions from local residents and San Luis Obispo County businesses.

The continued success of the Foundation’s fundraising efforts reflects the strong connection between the community and its police department.

Every K9 is truly the community’s dog.

ABOUT THE K9 UNIT

By deploying highly trained K9 teams in dangerous or unpredictable situations, the department improves safety for both officers and the community.

When fully staffed, the unit includes:

  • Oversight by a supervising sergeant
  • Two officer handlers
  • Two patrol canines specifically trained in
    • Suspect apprehension
    • Building searches
    • Handler protection
    • Article searches
    • Area searches
    • Advanced obedience

Each K9 team completes an intensive 200+ hour patrol training program prior to certification.

To maintain readiness, every team:

  • Completes annual recertification
  • Trains a minimum of 20 hours per month. Teams participate in intensive, day-long training sessions at the Inglis Police Dog Training Academy at least twice each month, with additional specialized training throughout the year.
