Atascadero is one of the most special communities on the Central Coast , a city with deep roots, strong neighbors, and a genuine sense of pride in who we are and where we live. And like any city, keeping it safe takes all of us working together. Here are 6 tips you can use today to help:
1. Get to Know Your Neighbors
This one sounds simple, but it’s one of the most powerful crime prevention tools there is. Strong neighborhoods, ones where people know each other’s names, notice unfamiliar faces, and look out for each other, are significantly harder targets for crime.
Introduce yourself. Join a neighborhood Facebook or Nextdoor group. Wave when you’re getting the mail. The Atascadero community has always had a small-town heart, and leaning into that is one of the best things you can do for your family’s safety.
2. Secure Your Entry Points
Did you know that the majority of vehicle burglaries in Atascadero occur due to a vehicle being left unlocked? And most residential burglaries happen through unlocked doors and windows, not dramatic forced entries.
A few simple habits make a big difference:
- Lock your doors every time you leave, even for short trips.
- Install deadbolts on exterior doors if you haven’t already.
- Keep garage doors closed, even when you’re home.
- Trim back shrubs near entry points so there are no hidden spots to lurk.
- Add motion-sensor lights to your driveway and entryways.
These aren’t expensive upgrades, they’re habits. And they work.
3. Don’t Advertise Valuables
Leaving visible valuables in your car is one of the most common invitations for break-ins. A bag on a seat, a laptop cord, spare change in the cupholder, all of it signals that there might be more inside. Take everything with you, or at minimum, keep it out of sight in your trunk.
The same principle applies to your home. Be thoughtful about what you post on social media, announcing a long vacation or showing off a new jewelry collection can inadvertently attract unwanted attention.
4. Use Technology Wisely
Home security technology has become more affordable and accessible than ever. Doorbell cameras, smart locks, and motion-activated lights add real layers of protection. Many Central Coast residents use these tools as both a deterrent and a way to monitor activity when they’re away from home.
If you do use security cameras, make sure you know how to operate the equipment and they’re positioned to capture faces and license plates. The footage is only useful if it shows what it needs to show and the timeliness of being able to share that information with law enforcement is key. Too often, residents have cameras they didn’t realize have been offline or don’t know how to access the footage when a crime occurs.
5. Report Suspicious Activity
You don’t need to be sure something is wrong to make a call. If something feels off, an unfamiliar vehicle parked in the same spot for days, someone behaving strangely near homes in your neighborhood, contact the Atascadero Police Department non-emergency number 805-461-5051 ext 5. Officers would rather do a quick check that turns out to be nothing than miss something that mattered.
Trusting that instinct, and knowing you can call without judgment, is exactly the kind of relationship the Atascadero Police Foundation works to support between officers and the people they serve.
6. Talk to Your Kids About Safety
Home safety conversations with children don’t have to be scary, they can be empowering. Teach kids what to do if there’s an emergency at home, who to call, what safe adults and safe places look like in your neighborhood. Kids who feel prepared feel safer, and that matters.
Programs like those supported by the APF help build those bridges early, creating positive relationships between young people and law enforcement that last a lifetime.

The Role the Atascadero Police Foundation Plays
The Atascadero Police Department works hard every day to keep this community safe. And the Atascadero Police Foundation exists to make sure they have what they need to do it; from K9 training and officer equipment, to community outreach events that build the trust and connection that safer neighborhoods are built on.
When community members support the APF, they’re not just writing a check, they’re investing in the infrastructure of safety. The programs we fund, the relationships we build, and the recognition we provide to first responders all contribute to a city where people feel protected and seen.
Be Part of a Safer A-Town
Safety is a team sport. It takes officers who are well-trained and well-supported, residents who are informed and engaged, and a community that looks out for one another. Atascadero has all of the ingredients and the Atascadero Police Foundation is here to help bring them together.
Want to do more? Consider making a donation to the APF, attending one of our upcoming events, or simply sharing this post with a neighbor.
Every action, big or small, helps build the safer Atascadero we all want to call home.
