Serving Those Who Served: APD Officers Join Honor Flight

The Honor Flight Network is a remarkable organization dedicated to helping veterans visit the memorials in Washington D.C., allowing them to pay tribute to their service and sacrifices. For the May 2025 Honor Flight, Honor Flight Central Coast selected 80 local veterans to participate, all at no cost to them. Each veteran, however, needed a guardian to accompany them on the trip—and these guardians, responsible for their own expenses, play an essential role in making the journey smooth, safe, and unforgettable for the veterans.

This year, the Atascadero Police Foundation was proud to sponsor two of our own officers—both veterans—as Guardians of Honor for veterans who didn’t have a guardian to accompany them on this special trip: Atascadero Police Officer Hurst, a U.S. Air Force veteran, and Atascadero Police K9 Officer Goudy, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

As Guardians, Officer Hurst and Officer Goudy had the honor of supporting our local veterans during their journey to Washington, D.C. The bond formed between the veterans and their Guardians is always powerful—built on mutual respect and shared experiences. Both officers brought their unique military backgrounds to the role, offering not just support, but a deeper connection to the veterans they accompanied.

The trip was an emotional and life-changing experience for everyone involved. For the veterans, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit the memorials that honor their service. For Officer Hurst and Officer Goudy, it was a chance to give back to the heroes who paved the way for their own careers in service.

At the Atascadero Police Foundation, we’re honored to support initiatives like the Honor Flight, which foster community bonds and celebrate the incredible sacrifices of our veterans. This year’s flight was just another way for us to show our appreciation for those who have served, and we’re excited to continue supporting our local heroes in the future.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Officer Hurst, Officer Goudy, and all the veterans who made this Honor Flight such a memorable and meaningful experience. Your courage and dedication inspire us all.
